When Virtue Meets Dirty Politics

This week’s radio commentary.

It’s not every day that we hear about a state legislator getting “fired” for his/her vote. But that’s exactly what we heard last Friday. Democratic Representative Bob Ziegelbauer ( Manitowoc) told the press that Democratic Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan ( Janesville) told him on Thursday he was officially fired from his position as chairman of the powerful Assembly Ways and Means Committee for his vote on a pro-life amendment during the budget process.

The amendment, offered by one of the Assembly’s staunchest pro-life legislators, Rep. Dan LeMahieu (R-Cascade), would have prohibited the use of state Medicaid funds for 2nd and 3rd-trimester abortions. The amendment, of course, came about as a result of the UW-affiliated Madison Surgery Center’s decision earlier this year to perform late, 2nd-trimester abortions.
