State Group Commends Wisconsin Senate for Passing “Sonya’s Law”
Wisconsin Family Action supports bill requiring women seeking an abortion
MADISON—“Women and their unborn children are the winners today,” says Wisconsin Family Action president Julaine Appling. “The liberals tried hard today to make Sonya’s Law say and do something it simply doesn’t say or do, but ultimately, the legislators voted the right way.”
Sonya’s Law, Senate Bill 206 and its Assembly companion Assembly Bill 227, requires that a woman have an ultrasound prior to having an abortion. The bill is named for a Milwaukee woman, Sonya, who was considering an abortion of her third child. Upon seeing a bus ad for free ultrasounds, she decided to have one. During that procedure, she heard her unborn child’s heartbeat—and decided against the abortion. In July, Sonya will deliver her baby boy.
Appling explains, “Sonya’s Law is really about making sure women are fully informed before they take this life-taking, irreversible action of killing their unborn child. For the life of me, I don’t understand why abortion proponents don’t want women to know the truth. They do everything they can to perpetuate the lie they so often repeat that what women are aborting is a ‘blob of tissue,’ ‘a clump of cells,’ ‘the product of conception.’
Women deserve to have the opportunity to know the truth—the truth that what they are carrying is a baby. This bill provides women with that opportunity.” Sonya’s Law is prudently and carefully crafted, giving the woman the option of the type of transducer used in the required pre-abortion procedure. The bill also requires that doctors performing abortions have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of where the abortions are being performed.
After the Democrats invoked a couple of delaying techniques, the Senate early this morning passed Sonya’s Law 17-15 (Sen. Luther Olsen was absent), with all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats voting against. The bill still needs approval in the State Assembly, which is expected to take it up tomorrow.
